Whole beans, even though they are a bit more expensive once you pour that cup of freshly brewed coffee you realize the extra money was worth it :) a nice extra gift for your friend would have been a coffe grinder to go with the beans :-)

I have it ground right there at the store. I only buy enough for one or two weeks so it will stay fresh. If I were shipping coffee to someone, and I knew they had a grinder, I might send whole beans because they stay fresher longer. The time from packing to shipping to arriving at the destination could be substantial. Don't worry...I am sure your friend will love your gift! If this person doesn't have a grinder, they could possibly bring the beans to a local store and ask to have them ground there. Especially if your friend is a regular customer! (My neighborhood store agreed to let me do just that with whole beans I bought elsewhere.)

i buy ground french roast...its cheap than beans . i'm very picky about the way i make my cooffe...i use 1/2 cup of ground. i fill my pot up the 8 cup mark, when it is done brewing i add 3 hot chocolate packets and a lot of powdered creamer(usually french vanilla, or hazelnut, or vanilla carmel) to the pot of fresh coffee ...stir, pour a big cup then add cool whip on top

Whole bean is the best. You can get a cheap grinder for $10 so it's not a problem. I know because I have a $10 grinder for spices. I think most coffee connoisseurs buy whole bean and grind just before brewing.

After beans are ground the air tends to make their oils rancid and the taste bitter. That is why true coffee fanatics buy them whole and grind them just before brewing.

The taste difference is like night and day. Whole bean is good within a week of being roasted. If you buy ground coffee, chances are you are drinking stale coffee.

Buy green beans and roast them yourself for ultimate freshness. A bag of green coffee beans can be stored for over a year and maintain its freshness. You just roast what you would use within a week and that way you are always drinking fresh coffee.
Storing beans in fridge or freezer affects the balance of the bean and damages the natural oils contained in the bean.

For best results, Roast once per week and grind just before every brew.
